Naked Notes
The latest works from Andreas Theologitis try to go beyond a mere study of the human body. These images, similar to his former works, turn insistently around the exploration of particular aspects of the nude, where aesthetics are combined with an almost ideological dimension. In this body of work he tries to give a different stage to his models.
An inquisitive nature, Andreas started with solid studies in architecture and history of art. He subsequently went on to embrace the challenging art of photography. After 35 years of intimate involvement, his photography leads us today to new, unexplored and adventurous venues.
When he first started shooting nude in the studio, he tried to see through his lens the real identity of the woman in front of him. Is it just a professional exercise, just an superficial acting and in the end, does the photographer only get what he deserves?
These questions gave Andreas the idea for these works. To provide, through photography, a stage for each model to express who she really is. To show her own being to the viewer standing in front of the photograph. To speak to the viewer through the medium she knows better than anyone else, her own body. Andreas decided to transform the naked body into a personal notice board simply by using colourful Post It notes. An intimate notice board to be used by each woman in her own unique way.
In this process, he gives to his models full freedom of expression. Freedom in what they write on the notes, in the choice of color, shape and size, even in the position of the notes on their body creating a dynamic expression of their personalities.
Here as performers and writers Natassa Diamanti, Vasso and Vera Mystaka spoke about their personal relationships, those with their parents, expressed their sexual preferences or described their bodies, they use citations from a poem or thoughts which matched their intimate mood. But this is an ongoing project: who knows what will come next?...
In this body of work Andreas challenges the viewer to an internal quest. Not just to superficially observe a photograph of a naked body but rather to manage another layer of information. The viewers are called upon to let their eyes wander over the texts in order to recreate their own impression of the personality of the model. To transfer their view from the reading of a nude to that of perceiving a narrative. A state where the body or a part of it is no longer as important as what is written on it. In the end, to accept a naked girl dressed with her own personal thoughts.
With “Naked Notes” Andreas goes beyond the beauty of the body, beyond what is accepted as the aesthetics of a photograph, giving another view of the reality of a naked body.
